TMJ & Jaw Pain
Relief from jaw pain, headaches, clicking, and TMJ disorders with custom night guards, bite-balancing, and a treatment plan tailored to you.
When Your Jaw Just Doesn't Feel Right
If you've been waking up with a sore jaw, hearing a click or pop when you open your mouth, or dealing with headaches that you can't quite explain — your TMJ might be the culprit. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that connects your lower jaw to your skull. When it's not working right, the symptoms can show up in places you wouldn't expect.
The good news: most TMJ problems respond really well to treatment, and most of the time it doesn't require anything invasive. Dr. Carroll has helped a lot of patients find relief — sometimes from years of pain — with simple, conservative approaches.
Common Symptoms
TMJ disorders show up in a lot of different ways. Some of the most common symptoms include:
- Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when you open or close your mouth
- Jaw pain or tenderness — especially in the morning
- Frequent headaches or migraines
- Earaches or pressure around your ears
- Pain in your face, neck, or shoulders
- Jaw locking or feeling stuck
- Difficulty chewing or pain when you eat
- Worn-down teeth from grinding
How We Treat TMJ Issues
Treatment depends on what's causing your symptoms. Dr. Carroll starts with a thorough exam — looking at your bite, your jaw movement, your teeth, and your overall jaw function — and then puts together a plan that fits your specific situation:
Custom night guards.
If you grind or clench your teeth at night, a custom-fitted night guard can be life-changing. It protects your teeth, takes pressure off your jaw, and lets the muscles relax. Many patients feel relief within a few weeks.
Bite adjustments.
Sometimes the way your teeth come together is putting extra strain on your jaw. Dr. Carroll can make small adjustments to even out your bite and reduce that strain.
Restorative work.
If you've worn your teeth down from grinding, restoring them with crowns or bonding can rebuild the proper height and reduce stress on your jaw.
Orthodontic correction.
In some cases, the underlying issue is a bite that's significantly off. Orthodontics or Invisalign can correct the alignment and help your jaw function better long-term.
Conservative therapies.
Heat, cold, gentle stretching, stress management, and avoiding hard or chewy foods can all help while we figure out the longer-term solution.
We Start Conservative
TMJ disorders can be complicated, and there's a lot of misinformation out there. Dr. Carroll's approach is to start with the simplest, least invasive options first — usually a custom night guard and some lifestyle adjustments — and only escalate if those don't work. Most patients never need anything more aggressive than that.
We won't push you toward expensive or invasive treatments unless they're truly necessary. We'll be honest about what's likely to help and what isn't.
Frequently Asked Questions
What causes TMJ disorders?
There's usually no single cause. Common contributors include teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw injury, stress and clenching, arthritis, and bite alignment issues. Sometimes it's a combination of several factors. Dr. Carroll will evaluate your specific situation to figure out what's driving your symptoms.
Will I need surgery?
Almost never. The vast majority of TMJ cases respond well to conservative treatments — things like custom night guards, bite adjustments, and stress management. Surgery is a last resort and rarely necessary.
How long until I feel better?
It depends on what's causing the pain. With a custom night guard, many patients feel relief within a few weeks. More complex cases can take longer. We'll set up a treatment plan and follow up to make sure things are improving.
Is TMJ treatment covered by insurance?
Coverage varies. Some plans cover night guards under dental insurance, while medical insurance may cover other aspects of TMJ treatment. We'll help you figure out what's covered and what's not before we get started.
